Let’s talk about where to find an accounts job in the UK.
I have a few videos on my YouTube channel where I talk about my ACCA journey, and very often my viewers ask me about the job market, opportunities and salary as an accountant.
So today I wanted to cover this in the post, which I will also make into a video at some point.
Where to find an accounts job in the UK?
There are several places you can find work as an accountant and below you have a list of websites that are the most known/ recommended/ useful if you were looking for a job in an accounts field.
Here is the video version of the topic covered:
1. The job websites
There are several websites that many agencies and employers post daily. You can sign up for weekly/ daily updates so that you don’t even have to look into the websites, the job post will be flooding your e-mail box daily. I have signed up to a few over the years and receive hundreds of job posts on a daily basis.
Most of them will ask you to fill in the profile details so that the website finds you the right job for your skillset.
You might also save your CV for an easy application process.
So here is the list (not exhaustive as new websites appear every day)
Reed.co.uk
This is one of the most popular and easy to use sites where you can find jobs not only for accountants but any skilled and unskilled jobs get posted there too.
All you need to do is to type what you are looking for and where are you looking to work and you should see plenty of opportunities to choose from.
Indeed
I am not going to repeat myself as to what the side does until there is an extra feature on the side worth mentioning.
CV-Library
Total jobs
GlassDoor
Fish4jobs
Monster
City Jobs
Google jobs
2. Recruitment agencies
There are many recruiters that specialise in accounts jobs and would be very helpful as well to develop your CV (if is it not perfect).
A good agent should be also able to find you the best-suited job and present you well to the potential employer.
However, from my experience, I found that sometimes agents take your details, promise you great work opportunities, only to never call you back with job prospects.
It almost seems like you are just a statistic to fill up their database.
But I did find a few jobs through an agent so I must mention this so that you can hopefully greater your chances of finding an accounts job.
The important thing to know- the recruitment agent charge around 15%-20% (depending on the seniority and the profession) of the client’s annual salary so it’s in their interest to place people in the right jobs.
So here is the list of the recruitment agents that specialise in the accounts jobs:
These are only a few, there are many others as well.
I would strongly recommend giving them a call and introduce yourself, as this way they will assign an agent who can find you a job in your area based on your skillset and experience.
3. Professional Membership websites
I am a member of an ACCA and on their website, they have a job search tab, where being a student or a qualified member you can find a job.
These jobs are posted by ACCA approved employers and also by employers that are specifically looking for ACCA members (and students alike) to hire.
CIMA – another accounting professional body, also has their career site were similar to ACCA the employers post jobs for professionals with CIMA members.
4. Directly on the accounting companies sites.
If you know a company that you would really like to work for, go onto their website and look for a career page, as most likely they will be advertising their jobs there.
The big four companies (EY, Deloitte, KPMG, PWC) are known to be attracting their employees that way and many other (especially those big firms) post their jobs directly on their websites.
So here is the link to the big four career sites in case live nearby and wanted to try your luck in the biggest players in the accounting world.
5. Freelancing jobs
If you rather work from home and only have few hours a day to spare working (or less), perhaps have small kids and only need part-time work, consider freelancing as accounting.
There are websites where you can find small contracts and work remotely for clients who are either small businesses (like a local plumber or small transport company) who need an accountant or a bookkeeper to sort their invoices/ expenses etc, or even file their self-assessments. These jobs pay a pretty good rate per hour and I love the flexibility it gives you. It’s like being your own boss really, just having small clients to work on behalf of.
It really is the best option to build your portfolio and who knows where this takes you, you might even be busy enough to consider opening up your own practice.
The most know website for such opportunities to find account job in the UK is UpWork
Conclusion
To find an accounts job in the UK is really not that hard and I hope the above-listed websites shows just how many places you can begin your search with.
The key is to work on your CV, as this represents your skills, experience and hopefully (f well written) will ultimately land you a great job.
Also with the recent pandemic, we have learned that life/ work balance has shifted people’s mindset to be more willing to work from home, therefore freelancing is becoming a favourite way of earning some good income.
I hope you have enjoyed this article and I know there are many more websites to find accounts job in the UK, but this should be enough to begin your search with.
